When she was just eighteen, Maria Claudia was in a very serious car accident that caused two deaths, her boyfriend’s and his best friend’s, and left her paralyzed from the neck down and caused a severe brain injury for the other girl who was also in the car.
During the first few days, she did not realize the extent of her paralysis and she was not aware of her boyfriend’s death. The realization of her injuries and his death were two severe blows that initially left her in shock, but as she processed her situation, her will congealed, like cooling iron, and she set her sights on finishing her career in Business. She went back to the university, taking more classes progressively as her strength improved, and with her Dad at her side taking notes and being her constant aide, she persevered.

Her family, especially her oldest brother, became increasingly frustrated because of the lack of infrastructure for disabled individuals in Colombia, and promised to find a way to bring them all to the United States, where he saw a brighter future for Maria Claudia. In the meantime, Maria Claudia graduated and worked for a hospital as a services coordinator for three years.
He kept his promise, and four years later, her brother called Maria to give her the good news. They left their extended family behind and her parents sold the retirement dream house they had bought, giving it all up for a better future for their youngest daughter. They joined their son in Minnesota for a while and then fled the cold by moving to Texas.

Maria Claudia took intensive English classes and will graduate with an MBA, with honors, outstanding grades and recommendations from her teachers. She has managed to regain strength in her arms with intensive therapy and works for a fashion designer in Austin and is an assistant to one of her teachers. Now thirty, though she looks like she is 20, she is now focused on her next challenge, finding a job to put all that education to a good use!
Maria Claudia told us her story with a serene, smiling face. She never shed a tear or showed any distress, not even at the painful memories. She pointed out that there was never a specific moment when her determination to never give up kicked in and she made long-term plans. She just assumed her situation and committed to do the best with what she has been given, and what an outstanding job she has done at it!

Sometimes the best gift in life is not what you buy in the store, but what comes from the heart. We hope the story of Shawna and Marina inspires you like it has us. Oh, the lessons we can learn from two 7-year-olds! Shawna and Marina are best friends. They sparkle when they’re together. We believe they’re Motah’d Kids not only because they’re just great kids overall, but they also are very thoughtful and loyal. You should see the book Shawna wrote for Marina when Marina was recently in the hospital Shawna knew her friend was afraid of having surgery. So, every night for nearly two weeks, Shawna worked on a book for Marina about MOTIVATION - motivation to not be scared. Shawna reminded Marina about Marina’s loves in life: monkeys, High School Musical, fashion, family and friends. Marina says she was so happy to read Shawna’s book, she easily made it through her surgery and hospital stay. The two friends agree: it’s the relationships you build that really matter. Their challenge: how are the relationships in your life? [More] [Less]
